Series Circuit Properties & Ohm's Law Applications (Lesson 4e)

We have reviewed the properties of Series Circuit for Resistance, Voltage and Current. Now we can go ahead and apply those properties and Ohm's law to different circuits.

We will analyze 3 different circuits with various parameters given or known. By using the Series Circuit Properties and Ohm's law we will determine the unknown or missing parameters.

CIRCUIT 1: (Known parameters, Total Voltage Vt, and individual Resistors Ra, Rb, and Rc. (See Diagram below.)

Inspecting the Diagram above, and by using the Series Circuit Properties and Ohm's law, we can find the missing parameters: Current (It), the equivalent Resistance (Req), and the voltage across each Resistor.

a) To find Equivalent Resistance, the individual Resistors are added:
Req = Ra + Rb + Rc (See Series Circuit Equivalent Resistance).
Req = 10 + 15 + 35 = 60 ohms.

b) To find the Current in the circuit, It = Vt / Req (Ohm's Law)
It = 30 V / 60 ohms that is, It = 0.5 Amp.
This current is the same as for every Resistor of the circuit. (See Series Circuit Current Property.)
