The Spanish surname Vázquez is a variant of the very common surname Velázquez which is a surname of patronymic origin, derived from the name of the father of the progenitor of this family. On the other hand Velázquez comes from the old German personal name "Bela", which is a diminutive form of the Latin and Greek name Belisarius. The ending "ez" in Spanish means "the son of"; thus, "the son of Belisarius" is the correct translation of Vázquez.

There was a house with this surname in the town of Sam Miguel de Aedo and in Blanes, in the valley of Carranza and district of Valmaseda, in the province of Biscay (Basque Country) - by the way Basque in Spanish is "Vasco". The head of this family was Diego Vázquez who lived during the seventeenth century. A descendant of Diego, called Andrés Vázquez y Hernaiz, who was born in 1785 and lived in Mentrida (Toledo). was granted the state of mobility by the Cancellory of Valladolid on the 9th of August 1819.

Today in Spain there are several Vázquez who bear a noble title. They are:

  • Don José Luis Vázquez Dodero, Marquis of Maratea
  • Don Carlos Vázquez Parga Roji, Marquis of Caracena del Valle
  • Irene Vázquez Parga Roji, Countess of Torrejón (sister of above Marquis)
  • José Ignacio Vázquez Parga Roji, Marquis of Monte Real (brother of above Countess)
  • Don Rodolfo Vázquez Velasco Pflucker, Count of Gamio.
Don Pedro Vázquez de Velasco y Puente was born in Lima, Perú in 1782, Don Andrés Vázquez de Velasco y Salazar and his brother Pablo were born in the same city in 1651 and in 1655 respectively and all of them were Knight members of the Military Order of Santiago. Members of the Order of Calatrava were Don José Félix Vázquez de Velasco and his brother Pedro, born in Huamanga in 1683 and in Andahuaylas in 1669, Perú, and Don José Joaquín Vázquez de Velasco y Tello, born in Lima in 1698.
